Summer Springs delivers natural spring water in returnable 15L bottles to homes, workplaces and organisations across selected areas of regional NSW. Empty bottles are collected on a later delivery, cleaned, sanitised, refilled and returned to service.
One Summer Springs 15L returnable bottle can deliver approximately 525 to 750 litres of water across an estimated 35 to 50 uses. Depending on whether it replaces one-way 15L containers or individual 600mL bottles, that can displace approximately 5.25 to 15 kilograms of one-way PET packaging. The benefit depends on the bottle being returned, professionally cleaned and placed back into use.

Sustainable does not mean impact-free
Bottles still require materials. Washing uses water and energy. Delivery vehicles use fuel. The credible sustainability case is not that these impacts disappear, but that one durable bottle can remain in use while a scheduled route services many homes and businesses.
That is more meaningful than making broad claims about being “zero-waste”, “carbon-neutral” or environmentally perfect without the evidence to support them.

The clearest environmental benefit of a returnable bottle is not simply that it can eventually be recycled. It is that the same bottle can remain in use repeatedly before recycling is necessary.
Based on Summer Springs' operating estimate, a properly handled BPA-free 15L returnable bottle may complete approximately 35 to 50 delivery cycles over a service life of up to five years. Across those cycles, the same container can deliver between 525 and 750 litres of spring water.

Packaging weights vary between manufacturers and bottle designs. These figures measure the equivalent weight of one-way PET packaging displaced. They are not a complete carbon or life-cycle assessment and do not include caps, labels, cartons, bottle washing, transport, recycling outcomes or the material used to manufacture the returnable bottle itself.
The environmental result also depends on how many times a bottle is reused, how far it travels, whether it is returned and how it is handled at the end of its service life.

Summer Springs bottles its water under a HACCP-certified food-safety and traceability system. Returnable bottles undergo a hot-wash, detergent, sanitiser and rinse process before every refill.
Summer Springs water sources and finished water are independently tested through the National Measurement Institute at laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. Published testing includes mineral characteristics, microbiological indicators, heavy metals and screening for more than 30 PFAS compounds.
The water is treated using physical filtration and non-chlorine disinfection processes. Summer Springs does not add chlorine, fluoride, sugar, sweeteners, colours, flavours or preservatives.

Is Summer Springs carbon neutral or certified?
No. Summer Springs is not certified carbon neutral, and we do not claim to be.
Carbon-neutral certification is a legitimate and detailed process. It generally requires a business to measure its greenhouse-gas emissions, develop reduction plans, independently verify its calculations, address its remaining emissions through eligible offsets and maintain ongoing reporting.
For a business our size, pursuing formal certification can involve tens of thousands of dollars in initial consultancy, emissions accounting and audit work, followed by ongoing annual verification, program and licensing costs.
We have not pursued carbon-neutral certification at this stage. Instead, we are directing our attention towards practical improvements within the parts of the operation we directly control.
These measures do not make Summer Springs carbon neutral. They are practical actions we can explain, continue improving and be held accountable for without overstating our environmental performance.
